Kindness Goes Unpunished

Get ready to enjoy Craig Johnson, author of the new mystery Kindness Goes Unpunished. He will be visiting all three Park County libraries this July. Johnson will appear at the Meeteetse Library at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 1. He’ll speak at 7 p.m., Monday, July 2 at the Cody Library, and he will round out his tour with an appearance at the Powell library on Monday, July 2, for a pizza party lunch appearance, 11:30-1:30.

If you love mysteries and Wyoming, you’ll love Craig’s books. He captures the state and its characters very well (although his latest book is set in Philadelphia). Don’t forget to mark your calendars for his speaking engagement. He speaks as well as he writes. You won’t regret it for a minute.

New Books in Cody

New books have stickersNew books

Want to browse the new books at the Cody Library? Look in the reading room for the newest additions. Hardback books have stickers with numbers that indicate what month they were added. Powell and Meeteetse branches share their books with us too. Those books have “R”s on them that indicate they are here on rotation from the other libraries. If you don’t see a book that you want to read, please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. If it’s checked out, we can place a hold (request) on it. Or you can do that from the online catalog at http://wyld.state.wy.us/park.

Here are some new titles that might pique your reading interest:

Hello world!

Welcome to the new Park County Library website test bed! Our current website is still the best place to find authoritative library information; this one is still in the works. Please feel free to play around with it, add some comments, and send suggestions to us using the contact form.

Casper author Tom Rea will present a program called “Ella Watson’s Fence: The Story Behind the Lynching of ‘Cattle Kate’” at the Park County Libraries this week. He’ll be at the Powell Branch Library on Monday, April 23; at the Cody library on Tuesday, April 24; and at the Meeteetse Branch Library on Wednesday, April 25. All the programs start at 7 pm.

The six men who lynched Ella Watson in 1889 were furious about the wire fence she had erected on her Sweetwater valley claim. Historian Tom Rea takes Watson’s fence as a starting place to talk about changing land use patterns as more people moved onto Wyoming’s open range late in the 1800s. Watson’s murder underscored the tensions between cattlemen and homesteaders, custom and law. Rea also explores how sensational newspaper reports created a false portrait of Watson as “Cattle Kate,” a rustler and prostitute.
